About Purple

Purple burst on the scene in 2016 with the world’s first No Pressure™ mattress, made from a unique Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ of their own invention (now called Purple Grid™). Using this material has allowed them to make their mattresses both extremely comfortable and surprisingly affordable.

They now offer three different beds, The Purple mattress (also known as the Original Purple), the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier. The Purple is the less expensive option (but still outstanding in quality) and the Hybrid is a more luxurious hybrid. All three beds have Purple’s proprietary “Smart Comfort Grid,” which makes for excellent pressure relief and temperature control. One thing to note about the Premier, which is very similar to the hybrid: you can personalize your comfort level by selecting the type and size of Purple Grid inside the mattress.

We love the Purple as one of the best values at its price point and the Purple Hybrid as one of the top hybrids on the market. We’ll focus on these two in this review. Read on for more on why these mattresses are outstanding options.

The Purple
METRICSRATINGDETAILS
Noise EXCELLENTThe Purple is as quiet as a mattress can be when you move around on it.
Temperature GREATPurple’s open grid design provides great airflow through the mattress, which keeps you very cool while you sleep.
Motion Isolation GREATMany customers who sleep with a partner on a Purple report little to no disturbance when there’s movement on the mattress.
Huggability GREATThe “pressure-releasing” material of Purple is designed to relieve pressure points and create optimal spinal alignment, and it is very effective at doing so.
Durability GOODThe Purple is made of a unique polymer foam that is promised to last for decades. However, the company has not been in business long enough to test whether that claim is true.
Odor GOODAs with most compressed beds, you can expect some off-gassing with the Purple, which should dissipate within a few hours.
Sex AVERAGEAs a foam bed, the Purple has minimal bounce. Many couples might prefer a more responsive feel.
Edge Support AVERAGEEdge support is not Purple’s strongest suit, though it is on par with most foam beds.
The Purple Hybrid
METRICSRATINGDETAILS
Temperature EXCELLENTPurple Hybrid’s open grid design does very well to promote airflow and dissipate body heat, so you stay cool while you sleep.
Motion Isolation GREATThe Purple Hybrid is up there with the very best when it comes to isolating motion. It’s very difficult to detect any motion coming from the other side of the bed, which makes for few disturbances during the night.
Huggability GREATThe smart comfort grid technology conforms very well to the contours of your body, relieving pressure while still providing great support to the spine.
Noise GREATThe Hybrid is just as quiet as the original Purple. Most sleepers report little to no noise from this bed.
Durability GOODHyper-elastic polymer combined with the individual responsive coil system makes the Purple Hybrid very durable. Given that this is a new product, there’s no telling exactly how long it should last.
Odor GOODAn insignificant amount of off-gassing is to be expected, as with any new mattress. It should dissipate within just a few hours.
Sex GOODThe Purple Hybrid is a very responsive hybrid mattress. Couples who like some bounce to their bed will be pleased.
Edge Support GOODThe Purple Hybrid’s reinforced perimeter make gives it very good edge support. Great for those who like to sleep closer to the edge of a mattress.
Is Purple or New Purple Hybrid the right mattress for me?

Judging the characteristics of a mattress is a subjective process – everyone has a different sleeping experience on different mattresses and their own interpretation of firmness, support, etc. Your own comfort and spinal support are perhaps the most critical things you need to consider when choosing the right mattress for you.

Both the Purple and Purple Hybrid are excellent options if you’re looking for quality and value. If you’re on a budget the Purple will work very well for you, especially if you like the conforming feeling of a foam bed (plus a unique floating feel). If you’re willing to spend a bit more, the Purple Hybrid is the more luxurious of the two.

Both will serve the needs of back, stomach, side and combination sleepers. Lighter-weight sleepers who enjoy sleeping on their side will be pleased with the conforming and support provided by both the Purple and Purple Hybrid. If you’d like to personalize your sleep, the Purple Hybrid Premier is available in multiple firmness options of different thicknesses and so can be customized for your sleep style. The Purple Hybrid has great conforming to give you that body-hugging feel that relieves pressure on the shoulders and hips, and the individual coil support to keep the spine in alignment.

We especially recommend the Purple and Purple Hybrid mattresses if you sleep with a partner. Both have great motion isolation. Also, if you tend to sleep hot. The open grid design of the comfort layer on both beds makes them extremely breathable and temperature neutral.

Firmness (1 Soft – 10 Firm)
The Purple and Purple Hybrid mattresses are medium/firm beds that are about a 6.5 on a firmness scale from 1 to 10. To some, the Hybrid will feel a tad firmer due its support coils.

The Purple Hybrid Premier is available in two different firmness levels which correspond to the different thicknesses of the Purple Grid layer (3 and 4 inches). The thicker that layer, the softer the mattress.

You can’t go wrong with any of the three Purple mattresses. The Purple is among the best bed-in-a-box foam mattress options on the market and a great value at only $999 for a Queen. The Purple Hybrid is comparable to high-quality luxury mattresses like Saatva and DreamCloud.
