What is a Latex Mattress?
Mattresses that contain at least one latex layer qualify as a latex mattress. Some will have multiple layers of latex or even latex in the support core. Latex mattresses can be all natural, synthetic, or a combination of both.
Some companies use Dunlop latex, others Talalay, both of which refer to the process used to manufacture them. These processes affect the overall feel of the mattress. Dunlop latex is poured all at once into a mold and after settling, ends up somewhat denser on the bottom and softer on the top. Talalay, on the other hand, is infused with air when molded, so it has a lighter feel and more uniform consistency throughout. This process also makes the Talalay variety slightly more expensive.
Pros
These mattresses are great when it comes to adhering closely to the contours of your body, which helps maintain spinal alignment and relieve pressure.
100% All Natural Latex is very breathable, so the mattresses made of this material will stay very cool. This makes them ideal for people who tend to sleep hot.
They are extremely durable. They’ll last you a long time. Even if the mattress is a little pricey, you can count on it lasting for at least 7-8 years.
They make very little noise when bearing weight/movement, so they can be great for people who shift a lot throughout the night, or who have partners who do so.
Cons
Though latex is eco-friendly it is a relatively expensive material. So latex mattresses tend to cost more than innerspring mattresses or memory foam alternatives. They will last you a long time, however, so there is value in a quality latex bed.
Latex beds are quite heavy. Many consumers report that they are difficult to move.
Latex Mattress vs. Memory Foam
There are many similarities between latex and memory foam mattresses. Both provide that hugging, sink-in feeling that so many sleepers love, though this contouring is slightly different in each. Memory foam mattresses will conform much more closely to the shape of your body, which makes for a very enveloping feel. Latex will also allow you to sink in, but less so. Instead of contouring exactly to your shape, it provides a more uniform hugging of the body.
They also breathe very well, keeping them way cooler than memory foam beds, which are notoriously hot. An aerated, all-natural Talalay latex mattress, like the Zenhaven, for example, has an open cell structure that allows air to circulate freely, countering body heat and keeping you cool and comfortable.
Another notable difference between the two is in bounce and responsiveness. The deep contouring of memory foam makes it great in terms of motion isolation, but very unresponsive. Latex mattresses provide much of the same contouring, but with far more responsiveness and bounce, which can be better for sex for many couples.
Both mattress types also give off very little noise and are very durable.
Is a Latex Mattress Worth It?
You should go with a latex mattress if you like the conforming quality of memory foam, but sleep somewhat hot. Latex will offer that sinking, hugging feel, but breathes much better so you can stay cool throughout the night.
If you like a degree of bounce and responsivity, you’ll get it with latex. They will move with you, so you won’t feel you’re sinking too much with a latex mattress.
Some are made of high quality all-natural latex, completely organic, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic. For this and more we recommend Zenhaven as the best luxury latex mattress out there.
